Reception

The Beginning of a Purposeful Education

Step 1 | Enquiry & Tour

Children can start Reception the September after their fourth birthday.

Choosing a school is a significant decision for your whole family. Our aim is that you leave with a clear understanding of our strong academic standards, and how our character development approach underpins and strengthens every aspect of school life.

Step 2 | Application

Use our online application form to begin your child’s journey with Fidelis College.

Step 3 | Assessment Day and Parent Interview

At Reception entry, our approach is designed to give us a genuine understanding of your family and your child as an individual. There are two steps to our assessment process:

Parent interview: We believe parents are the prime educators of their children, therefore you will be invited to a parent interview so we can learn more about your family, your child and the hopes you hold for them.

Child centred: We also visit children at their current nursery and speak with their key worker to gain a broader picture of their development. This approach is proven to make the transition from nursery to school seamless. A written reference will also be requested.

If your child does not attend nursery, or if a visit is not possible, we will arrange an alternative opportunity to spend time with them in our school environment.

Step 4 | Offer & Enrolment

After the assessment process, we reflect carefully on each child. If a place is available and we believe Fidelis Prep is the right environment for your child to flourish both personally and academically, we will be in touch with a formal offer.

Families who accept a place will then be invited to meet the class teacher and children will be invited to attend taster mornings, ensuring your child feels known and confident for their first day of school.

Year 3

Transition to Formal Primary Education

Step 1 | Enquiry & Tour

Year 3 marks an important stage in Prep. Academic depth increases and pupils grow in independence, building the confidence to take ownership of their learning. We continue to develop an ambitious attitude to learning, encouraging pupils to challenge themselves, think deeply and take pride in their progress.

Step 3 | Assessment Day and Parent Interview

At 7+ entry, our approach is designed to give us a clear and balanced understanding of your child both academically and personally.

There are two parts to our assessment process.

Parent interview
We believe parents are the prime educators of their children. You will be invited to a meeting so we can learn more about your child’s current experience, their strengths, and the aspirations you hold for them.

Pupil assessment
Your child will be invited to spend a day with us from 9.15am to 3.50pm. They will complete age appropriate standardised assessments in English and mathematics, as well as join the class for the remainder of the day.

This will allow your child to experience the school day and meet their peers and teachers. It also enables us to see how they approach learning and engage with others. A written reference from your child’s current school will also be requested.

This process helps ensure that Fidelis Prep is the right environment for your child to continue to flourish.

Step 4 | Offer & Enrolment

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main entry points?

We welcome pupils at several key stages, including Early Years, 7+, 11+ and Sixth Form. Entry at other points may also be possible, subject to availability. Our admissions team will always take the time to talk through the most appropriate entry point for your child and advise on next steps.

Why choose Fidelis College for my child's education?

Families choose Fidelis because we combine high academic expectations with genuine personal care. We take the time to know each pupil as an individual and to support them academically, pastorally, and spiritually. Our aim is not simply exam success, but to help young people grow into confident, compassionate, and resilient individuals.

What kind of child thrives at Fidelis College?

There is no single “type” of Fidelis pupil. Our students are curious, kind, and willing to grow — whether they arrive confident and outgoing or quieter and still finding their voice. What matters most is a readiness to engage, to try, and to develop both character and intellect within a supportive community.

What does ‘character-first’ actually look like day to day?

Character is woven into everyday school life, not added on. Through tutor time, assemblies, service opportunities, and daily interactions, pupils are encouraged to show joy, courage, responsibility, and service. Staff model these values consistently, helping pupils develop strong habits, self-awareness, and respect for others.

How Catholic is the school?

Fidelis College is proudly Catholic, with faith and values at the heart of school life. Our ethos shapes how we care for pupils and treat one another. Catholic families are fully supported in their faith journey, and families of other faiths — or none — are warmly welcomed and respected. Our focus is on shared values, understanding, and community.

How involved are parents?

We see education as a partnership. Parents are kept well informed and are encouraged to engage with school life, whether through communication with tutors, attending events, or sharing insights that help us support their child. We value open dialogue and believe that strong relationships between home and school make a real difference.
