Core Subjects

Our GCSE English Language course equips students with the ability to read fluently, write confidently, and communicate effectively. Students analyse a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts, developing critical thinking and interpretive skills. Alongside textual analysis, they refine imaginative and transactional writing abilities, learning to structure arguments, employ persuasive techniques, and write with clarity and precision. English Language fosters skills that underpin success across all subjects and in everyday life, from articulating ideas clearly to understanding complex information.
English Literature encourages students to explore some of the most influential works in the English language, from Shakespeare and 19th-century novels to modern plays and poetry. Pupils learn to examine how language, form, structure, and context create meaning, while developing personal interpretation and analytical skills. The study of literature broadens cultural awareness, nurtures empathy, and inspires a love of reading, while also building the critical thinking and communication skills essential for future academic study.

Combined Science provides a broad introduction to Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, giving students a rounded scientific education. While covering key concepts from all three disciplines, Combined Science emphasizes understanding, practical experimentation, and analytical skills. This pathway ensures students develop scientific literacy and problem-solving abilities while maintaining flexibility for future A-Level study in any of the sciences.

Option Choices

Art encourages creativity, experimentation, and self-expression. Students explore techniques across drawing, painting, sculpture, and digital media while developing independent projects and personal portfolios. The course cultivates visual literacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, nurturing confidence in original thought and creative risk-taking, skills that are valuable in both artistic and professional contexts.
Computer Science equips students with logical reasoning, programming skills, and a practical understanding of technology. Pupils explore algorithms, software development, data analysis, and contemporary digital issues such as AI and cybersecurity. The course fosters problem-solving, analytical thinking, and adaptability, preparing students for careers in computing, engineering, and a rapidly evolving digital economy.
Design & Technology teaches students to combine creativity with practical problem-solving. They learn to design, prototype, and evaluate products while considering materials, sustainability, and user needs. The course develops innovation, critical thinking, and technical skills, ideal for students interested in engineering, product design, or entrepreneurship.
Drama nurtures confidence, creativity, and teamwork. Students engage in acting, devising, directing, and performance analysis, exploring a variety of theatrical styles and practitioners. The course develops communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, preparing pupils for careers in performing arts, teaching, or any field requiring self-expression and presentation abilities.
This course combines science, health, and practical skills. Students learn about nutrition, food safety, and the chemistry of cooking, developing the ability to plan and prepare balanced meals. Beyond practical skills, pupils gain analytical thinking, an understanding of wellbeing, and awareness of sustainability and global food issues, essential knowledge for everyday life and careers in health, nutrition, or hospitality.
GCSE French develops communication skills, cultural understanding, and linguistic confidence. Pupils learn to listen, speak, read, and write in French across everyday, academic, and professional contexts. The course encourages curiosity about Francophone cultures, strengthens problem-solving through language learning, and lays the foundation for advanced study or international opportunities.

The primary focus of The Fidelis curriculum is a philosophy that encompasses true freedom with a curriculum that is broad, balanced and academically rigorous. The emphasis is on teaching pupils to think and cultivating a spirit of intellectual adventure through exposure to ‘the best that has been thought and said’.

Choices

At The Fidelis College, we provide a broad curriculum that goes beyond the bounds of the National Curriculum.

Pupils study core subjects (English, Maths, Religious Studies, and Science. For Science, pupils can choose Combined Science or Separate Science. Pupils also choose from a range of options.

Guidance is provided to all pupils in Year 9, and new pupils joining us in Year 10 are given support as well in deciding on the subjects they will choose.

As well as preparing for exams at the end of Year 11, pupils participate in a wide range of co-curricular activities, a varied and competitive sporting programme and our extensive volunteering opportunities.

What are the main entry points?

We welcome pupils at several key stages, including Early Years, 7+, 11+ and Sixth Form. Entry at other points may also be possible, subject to availability. Our admissions team will always take the time to talk through the most appropriate entry point for your child and advise on next steps.
