Fidelis Senior

Preparing for Future Success

Dr Pedro Virgili
Head of Senior

Head’s Welcome

“Prediction is very difficult, especially about the future.” – so said humorously Niels Bohr, one of the pioneers of the atomic model and well known to all my Chemistry students, I am sure!

I would certainly not have predicted back in 2013, when I first started working on the launch of the Cedars School, that 12 years later I would be here to see and to help in the next exciting chapter of PACT schools: the merger of our three schools, Oakwood, the Laurels and the Cedars into all-through co-ed school, Fidelis College.

It never ceases to amaze me how much has been achieved in all this time: a very close partnership with parents, an emphasis on the acquisition of virtue as the gateway to true happiness, our tutorial system, very high academic standards, excellent co-curricular offering and pastoral care… and all this imbued and permeated with perennial Catholic values making up a unique educational offering.

GCSE Option Choices

At Fidelis College, we provide a broad curriculum that goes beyond the bounds of the National Curriculum.

Core Subjects

Our GCSE English Language course equips students with the ability to read fluently, write confidently, and communicate effectively. Students analyse a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts, developing critical thinking and interpretive skills. Alongside textual analysis, they refine imaginative and transactional writing abilities, learning to structure arguments, employ persuasive techniques, and write with clarity and precision. English Language fosters skills that underpin success across all subjects and in everyday life, from articulating ideas clearly to understanding complex information.
English Literature encourages students to explore some of the most influential works in the English language, from Shakespeare and 19th-century novels to modern plays and poetry. Pupils learn to examine how language, form, structure, and context create meaning, while developing personal interpretation and analytical skills. The study of literature broadens cultural awareness, nurtures empathy, and inspires a love of reading, while also building the critical thinking and communication skills essential for future academic study.
Mathematics at Fidelis College is designed to develop logical reasoning, problem-solving, and numeracy skills. Students explore number, algebra, geometry, statistics, and probability, learning to apply mathematical thinking to real-world problems. Beyond formulas, mathematics fosters critical thinking, analytical precision, and the ability to approach complex challenges methodically, skills that benefit every area of study and provide a strong foundation for A-Level courses and future careers.
Religious Studies challenges students to think deeply about belief, ethics, and morality. They explore Catholic Christianity, Judaism, and contemporary moral issues, examining different perspectives while reflecting on their own values. Students develop skills in critical thinking, reasoned argument, and ethical analysis, gaining an understanding of global cultures and the importance of respectful dialogue. Religious Studies supports personal development, social awareness, and the ability to engage thoughtfully with complex issues.
Biology introduces students to the living world, from cellular processes and genetics to ecosystems and human physiology. Pupils develop analytical and investigative skills through experiments and practical work, learning to interpret data and apply scientific reasoning. Understanding biology prepares students for advanced study in medicine, environmental science, and other STEM fields while fostering curiosity about life processes and the natural world.
Chemistry focuses on the composition, properties, and transformation of matter. Students study atomic structure, chemical reactions, energy changes, and organic chemistry, developing problem-solving and experimental skills through practical investigations. Chemistry nurtures analytical thinking and precision, equipping students with knowledge relevant to scientific, technological, and medical careers, as well as a deeper understanding of how the material world functions.

Physics develops an understanding of the principles governing energy, forces, waves, electricity, and the structure of the universe. Students apply theoretical knowledge in practical investigations, learning to analyse data, solve complex problems, and think quantitatively. Physics cultivates logical reasoning, innovation, and technical literacy, preparing students for further study in engineering, technology, and the sciences.

Combined Science provides a broad introduction to Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, giving students a rounded scientific education. While covering key concepts from all three disciplines, Combined Science emphasizes understanding, practical experimentation, and analytical skills. This pathway ensures students develop scientific literacy and problem-solving abilities while maintaining flexibility for future A-Level study in any of the sciences.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main entry points?

We welcome pupils at several key stages, including Early Years, 7+, 11+ and Sixth Form. Entry at other points may also be possible, subject to availability. Our admissions team will always take the time to talk through the most appropriate entry point for your child and advise on next steps.

Why choose Fidelis College for my child's education?

Families choose Fidelis because we combine high academic expectations with genuine personal care. We take the time to know each pupil as an individual and to support them academically, pastorally, and spiritually. Our aim is not simply exam success, but to help young people grow into confident, compassionate, and resilient individuals.

What kind of child thrives at Fidelis College?

There is no single “type” of Fidelis pupil. Our students are curious, kind, and willing to grow — whether they arrive confident and outgoing or quieter and still finding their voice. What matters most is a readiness to engage, to try, and to develop both character and intellect within a supportive community.

What does ‘character-first’ actually look like day to day?

Character is woven into everyday school life, not added on. Through tutor time, assemblies, service opportunities, and daily interactions, pupils are encouraged to show joy, courage, responsibility, and service. Staff model these values consistently, helping pupils develop strong habits, self-awareness, and respect for others.

How Catholic is the school?

Fidelis College is proudly Catholic, with faith and values at the heart of school life. Our ethos shapes how we care for pupils and treat one another. Catholic families are fully supported in their faith journey, and families of other faiths — or none — are warmly welcomed and respected. Our focus is on shared values, understanding, and community.

How involved are parents?

We see education as a partnership. Parents are kept well informed and are encouraged to engage with school life, whether through communication with tutors, attending events, or sharing insights that help us support their child. We value open dialogue and believe that strong relationships between home and school make a real difference.
